George Szell: A Life of Music

Illustrated talk on the first full biography of one of the greatest conductors of the 20th Century. Including a live performance of the Scherzo from Szell’s Piano Quintet, Opus 2, composed in 1911, at the age of 14. Coincidentally, Szell taught at both Mannes and The New School in the 1940s while conducting at The Metropolitan Opera.

Music Director and guest conductor of orchestras, music festivals, and opera in this country and abroad. Former Music Director of The Mannes Orchestra. Graduate of Juilliard in the conducting class of Jean Morel, he also studied with Pierre Monteux, and, on a Fulbright Scholarship in Hamburg, Germany, with Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt.
